The capital of oyster farming

Gujan-Mestras unveils the true nature of the Arcachon Bay!

Gujan-Mestras is a town that lives to the rhythm of the tides, enjoying the simple pleasures of an authentic heritage.

The town has also been shaped by the contrast of sea and forest landscapes, the charm of the oyster-farming tradition, the joy of port-side chatter, markets and much more.

A true inland sea spanning over 155 km², the Arcachon Bay offers the ideal and necessary conditions for oyster breeding – with its climate, the daily renewal of its waters, and their nutritious wealth. Some 7,000 tonnes of oysters are produced in the bay each year.

With its seven ports, various oyster farms, sea school and the Maison de l’Huître, Gujan-Mestras is the oyster-farming capital of the Arcachon Bay.

On the ports, take the time to savour a plate of oysters accompanied by bread, butter, lemon and white wine, during one of the many traditional oyster-shack tastings.

The oyster farmers who welcome you there are always willing to share their knowledge and passion for their profession. The taste of these oysters truly is incomparable.
